Retired
Corporal Mark Walters is retiring from the Colton Police Department after 28 years of service to the community. Mark started his law enforcement career with
Colton Police Department in 1981 as a reserve officer. After attending the police academy in 1983, Mark became a full-time police officer and was assigned to
patrol. Early in his career, the Department started its SWAT team and Mark was one of the initial members as a SWAT sniper. It was soon discovered that Mark
had a passion and great aptitude for the community relations aspect of law enforcement. He was promoted to Detective/Corporal and assigned to the role of Crime
Prevention/Community Relations where he developed and provided many successful community programs. From that point on, whether assigned to community relations
or not, Mark has been to “go to” guy for most of the Department’s community relations projects.
Mark was the Department’s first DARE officer and during the 2 ½ years of providing drug-resistance lessons to the elementary schools in Colton, he was selected
by the DARE organization as the “Officer that Best Represents DARE.” During Corporal Walters’ successful career, he enjoyed various assignments such as; General
Detectives, Inland Regional Narcotics Enforcement Team (IRNET), Network Administrator, Records Supervisor, and most recently, Supervisor of Youth Services.
Mark has mentioned a number of plans he hopes to accomplish during retirement. Chiefly, he is looking forward to spending more time with his two daughters,
Rebecca (21) and Kelly (23). Also, in terms of recreational activities, Mark has recently advanced his hobby from remote control planes and gliders to R.C.
helicopters. He has added cameras to his R.C. planes and his in-flight videos can be seen on U-Tube. Mark acknowledges that after traveling to various locations
throughout the US and visiting family, retirement may become mundane at which point he may entertain the notion of returning to work, part-time of course. Mark
imagines future entrepreneurial endeavors could likely include computing.
Corporal Walters will officially retire on May 15, 2009. His unique talents and great personality will be greatly missed throughout the Department and the community.
